Frequently Asked Questions
“Good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under perfect control.”
– Joseph Pilates

How often should I do Pilates and how soon should I expect to see results?
We recommend practicing Pilates 2-3 times per week to start. Expect to feel results within one week, and expect to see results after two. Obviously, the more often you do Pilates, the better results you will see. Your clothes will fit better because you will be losing body fat and gaining lean muscle mass simultaneously.
Are there joining fees, processing fees and monthly dues to be a Pilates Mill Creek member?
No. We are not a gym. The only cost is the price of the sessions themselves. For our current rates, please call 425.379.7020
What time does Pilates Mill Creek offer their classes?
We offer our Pilates classes on the hour from 6am to 8pm weekdays and Saturday's from 8am to 2pm. Also, your appointments do not have to be at the same time and day each week. They can vary from week to week.
What should I wear and what should I bring to each session?
Pilates/Yoga apparel is best, as it allows breathability and stretch ability. For sanitary reasons, it is our policy to wear socks to each session. For your convenience you may purchase our
non-slip sole, form-fitting ToeSox™ in our lobby. Also, bring a towel as you will perspire during the exercises. Apparel may also be purchased in our lobby.
What are some of the differences between Pilates and Yoga?
Pilates and Yoga are similar; both are low impact forms of exercise, both focus on connecting your breath with your movement, both elongate your spine and muscles but Pilates focuses much more on your abdomen and lower back (core). Pilates works from the idea that once you strengthen your core, everything else follows.
While both Yoga and Pilates improve your overall flexibility and balance while calming the body and mind, Pilates uses equipment for more of a resistance training workout. Yoga uses the resistance of your body weight as Pilates uses your body weight and machines like the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, etc. Pilates is also better for developing lean muscle mass to not only burn calories during each session but to help burn more calories throughout your day. (The more lean muscle mass you have, the more calories your body is able to burn.)
Most types of Yoga hold poses as Pilates moves from one exercise to the next. With Pilates, you work your muscles much more synergistically and Pilates helps correct muscular imbalances better than most types of Yoga as well.
Is it possible to lose weight doing Pilates?
Absolutely! Weight loss occurs when the number of calories consumed is less than the number of calories expended. Pilates creates a deficit of about 300 calories per session and develops lean muscle mass to increase your metabolism which in return, will burn more calories throughout your day.
What if I'm not very flexible, can I still do Pilates?
Yes. Actually, most people are not very flexible. Our muscles and joints will stiffen from under use if we don't add movement to our bodies on a regular basis. Also, many of us work long hours sitting at a computer which can compress and disfigure the spine while causing your muscles to conform to this incorrect alignment. Pilates will help to alleviate stiffness and add more flexibility to your spine and entire body. If you are not flexible, that’s a perfect reason to begin Pilates so that you do become more flexible.
Is Pilates for everyone?
Pilates is for most people. If you’re looking to develop long, firmer muscles without bulk, improve your flexibility and range of motion, correct your posture, relieve stress and tension, and lose weight and inches…Pilates is right for you. Please check with your health care practitioner before starting any exercise program. Medical Doctors, Physical Therapist and Chiropractors recommend Pilates to their patients as well for their overall well being.
Is Pilates resistance training and can it replace exercises done with free weights and machines in a gym?
Yes. Many of our members make the switch from a gym to our studio for the benefits of resistance training without the unwanted bulk and higher risk for injuries as seen in weights. Pilates develops muscular strength and definition without adding bulk and has minimal impact on the joints decreasing the chance of injury.
If I’m pregnant, can I participate in Pilates?
Normally, Pilates is the ideal form of exercise for pregnancy but please first consult with your health care practitioner for exercise clearance. Pilates is a great way to learn how to strengthen, stretch and relax your body while connecting with your breath. Some women, who are used to working out with weights, may want to switch to Pilates during this time.
Should I change my current diet regime?
Practicing Pilates will help you develop your mind and body connection to allow you to be able to listen to what your body needs and when it needs it. Your body will naturally become more fit and you will make better food choices as a result.
What if I’m not as good of in shape as the other members in my Pilates session, will I be left behind and/or slow the group down?
No. One of the great things about Pilates is that each exercise can be modified to each individual's fitness level. Each exercise can be made less or more challenging during your class. Your instructor will individually choose what level of intensity is going to be best for you.
I feel that I am very athletic and in great physical health. Would Pilates take me to the next level?
Yes, definitely. Each exercise in Pilates can be made less or more challenging depending on your level of fitness. Athletes and regular health club members tend to have a lot of muscular imbalances from using weight machines and free weights. Pilates will elongate and restore your body’s natural balance and elasticity. Our exercises will also help you correct any deviations of your spine so that your body works more efficiently, reducing the chance of injuries caused by misalignment.
